For newborns and infants (0-24 months), the outfit choice for a naming ceremony, first Lohri, or first Vaisakhi matters more than at any other age. The Newborn Outfit collection is hand-stitched in soft Giza Cotton, sized specifically for infant proportions, with gentle embroidery thread that won't scratch sensitive skin.
Our newborn pieces follow the same Morni Chandra peacock embroidery tradition as our older-child collections, but with smaller, lighter motifs sized appropriately for an infant. For families ordering for a baby's naming ceremony (Janam Sanskar) or first Lohri, this is the collection to start in.
Why Giza Cotton for Infants
Newborn skin is thin, sensitive, and reacts to scratchy or chemical-treated fabrics. We use Giza Cotton — extra-long-staple Egyptian cotton with fibers 1.4-2.0 inches long versus standard cotton at 0.8-1.1 inches. Longer fibers spin into smoother threads, less micro-friction against skin, and better dye-fastness across washes (newborns wear and outgrow outfits fast — the dye can't fade in 3 wears).
The full safety analysis — fiber properties, dye chemistry, chemical-free finishing, comparison to synthetic blends — is at our Giza Cotton newborn safety blog post. We also size up gently (a slight oversize) so the outfit doesn't need to fit snugly against the baby's skin.
Sizing for Newborns
Standard sizing for our age 0-5 tier starts at 12 months and goes up. For newborns under 12 months, we hand-size on a case-by-case basis — message Veerpal on WhatsApp with the baby's current weight, height, and chest circumference. We need 2-3 measurements to cut a piece that fits a newborn comfortably.
We also recommend ordering slightly oversized for hand-down to younger siblings. With proper care (hand wash, air dry, store in cotton bag), a Newborn Pehrawa can be worn by 2-3 children in succession — the construction holds up longer than the baby fits in it. See our sibling hand-down guide for the full approach.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What about the Pagg for a newborn?
- For newborns, we use a soft pre-tied Pagg with a gentle elastic band — no pinning, no folding, just placement. The fabric is colour-coordinated with the kurta. Some families opt to skip the Pagg for very young babies and use a simple rumal (cloth covering) instead.
- Can I order ahead of a baby's birth?
- Yes — many families order during the second-trimester so the outfit is ready for a naming ceremony or first Lohri. Specify approximate measurements (often estimated from older siblings or family build), and we'll size accordingly. Adjustments after birth are possible if needed.
- Is the embroidery hypoallergenic?
- Our embroidery thread is standard cotton thread (multicolour) or metallic-wrapped cotton (golden/silver) — no synthetic plastics or chemical coatings that commonly cause infant skin reactions. We don't test for hypoallergenic certification, but our materials are aligned with what most infant-clothing brands consider safe.
