What Happens at a Naam Karan?
The Naam Karan is held at the Gurdwara, usually within a few weeks of the birth, during the congregation's kirtan (devotional singing). After the ardaas, a Hukam — a random reading from the Guru Granth Sahib — is taken, and the first letter of the first word of that Hukam becomes the first letter of the baby's name. The family then chooses a name beginning with that letter, and "Singh" is added for a boy ("Kaur" for a girl).
It is a joyful, communal occasion — which is why the dress is celebratory and traditional rather than sombre. Knowing that shapes every clothing choice below.
What Should the Baby Boy Wear?
The traditional choice is a kurta chadra — the kurta with a draped lower chadra — or, for the full coordinated look, a Complete Pehrawa (kurta chadra plus jutti, kaintha, and pagg). For a naming ceremony specifically, families lean toward soft, comfortable fabric and a colour that photographs well, because the baby will be held, passed around, and photographed for hours.

Colours to Choose (and Avoid)
Because the Naam Karan is a celebration, vibrant colours are the norm:
- Best for a naming ceremony — saffron, ochre, red, royal blue, emerald, peacock blue. These read as festive and photograph beautifully.
- Avoid — black and pure white. Both carry mourning associations in Punjabi culture and feel off-key for a celebratory baby occasion.
- If you want subtle — a cream or ivory with colourful Morni Chandra embroidery gives a softer look while staying celebratory.
Covering the Baby's Head
Inside the Gurdwara, every head is covered, including the baby's. For a baby boy, the gentlest option is a small pre-tied Pagg (turban) with a soft band — no pinning, no tight wrapping — or a simple patka or rumal (cloth covering) for very young infants. What the Family Wears
The immediate family typically dresses in traditional Punjabi attire too — heads covered, shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed at the entrance. Many families coordinate: the father, brothers, and other boys in kurta chadra or Complete Pehrawa, the women in Punjabi suits, often in a shared colour palette so the family photographs as one. Dressing a Newborn Comfortably
A few practical things matter more for a newborn than for an older child. Look for soft, non-scratchy fabric (we use Giza Cotton), wider neck openings and snap or easy closures for quick dressing, and a pre-pleated chadra so there is nothing to drape. We also suggest ordering a touch oversized — a naming-ceremony outfit often becomes a keepsake, and a slightly larger size means it can be worn again at the first Lohri or a first birthday.
