The Kudta Chadra is the foundation of any Punjabi traditional outfit. The Kudta is the long upper garment; the Chadra is the lower wrap-around piece. Every Pehrawa Boutique Kudta Chadra is hand-stitched on premium Giza Cotton with our signature Morni Chandra peacock embroidery, custom-fit to your measurements. Most families pair this with our Complete Pehrawa bundle to get the full traditional look (kurta, jutti, kaintha, pagg) with savings and free worldwide shipping.
Why Giza Cotton Is the Right Fabric
Every Kudta Chadra and Complete Pehrawa at Pehrawa Boutique uses Giza Cotton — extra-long-staple cotton grown in the Nile river valley of Egypt. The "extra-long-staple" designation refers to fiber length: Giza Cotton fibers are 1.4-2.0 inches, compared to standard cotton at 0.8-1.1 inches. Longer fibers spin into smoother, finer, stronger threads.
For the wearer, this means several practical benefits:
- Smoother surface — fewer micro-bumps means less scratching against skin, important for children's sensitive skin
- Better embroidery base — hand-embroidery requires a stable fabric; Giza Cotton stays flat and tensioned, allowing the Morni Chandra peacock motif to sit cleanly
- Holds dye uniformly — produces the deep, rich background colours that make the multicolour embroidery pop
- Durable across multiple washes — important for an outfit you might pass down to a younger sibling
- Breathable — crucial for outdoor festivals like Vaisakhi where kids will run around
The Morni Chandra Peacock Embroidery
"Morni" means peacock in Punjabi; "Chandra" refers to the moon-shaped circular patterns the artisans build the design around. The result is a peacock with fanned-out feathers, rendered in thread on Giza Cotton. The motif sits on the back, sleeves, and front placket of the kurta — visible from every angle.
The peacock has cultural weight in Punjab. It appears in folk songs, in wedding decor, and as a symbol of beauty and pride. Putting one on a child's kurta is a way of saying "this matters" without using words.
The technique is unchanged from how it was done two generations ago in Bathinda: pattern transfer with chalk, thread selection (6-10 colours for multicolour pieces; metallic gold or silver for the golden/silver variants), wooden hoop stretching, hand stitching with chain stitch, satin stitch, and French knots in sequence, and a final quality inspection by the workshop supervisor (Singh's mother) before any piece leaves Bathinda.
A single Kudta Chadra requires two to four days of focused stitching from a master artisan. We don't machine-embroider. Browse our full Morni Chandra series to see the variants.
Hand-Crafted in Bathinda, Punjab
Every piece you order from Pehrawa Boutique is hand-crafted at our Bathinda workshop in Indian Punjab. Production is led by founder Sukhpreet Singh's mother, with a senior tailor and team of women embroidery artisans who have spent decades perfecting the cut, the embroidery, and the finishing details.
This is craft passed down inside families, not a brand we built last year. The senior tailor learned from his father; the embroidery artisans were taught by their mothers. None of it is in a textbook. If we don't keep ordering hand-stitched pieces, the technique dies in one generation.
Quality inspection is done personally by Singh's mother before any piece leaves the workshop. Customer-facing operations on the diaspora side are led by Veerpal Khera in Brampton, Ontario, who handles WhatsApp consultations for sizing, custom embroidery, and post-delivery follow-up.
Sizing & Custom Fit
Every piece is custom-stitched to your measurements. We do not use standard pre-cut sizes. After you order, Veerpal will reach out on WhatsApp to confirm the five key measurements (chest, shoulder width, kurta length, sleeve length, waist) before any fabric is cut.
For kids, our pricing reflects an age-tier structure: ages 0-5 base price; ages 6-10 add $5 on clothing items; ages 11-15 add $10. Accessories (Jutti, Kaintha, Pagg) are flat-priced regardless of age. The age tiers reflect the additional fabric and embroidery work required as children grow.
Detailed measurement instructions and a size chart are at our size guide page. For sizing for newborns through 24 months, message Veerpal directly — we handle infant tier sizing on a case-by-case basis.
Care Instructions
To keep your piece in heirloom condition for years, follow these care guidelines:
- Hand wash recommended. Cool water, mild fragrance-free detergent. Hand wash gently rather than machine.
- Avoid scrubbing on embroidered areas. Let the embroidery soak rather than rub directly.
- Air dry only. No tumble dryer — heat damages embroidery threads and shrinks Giza Cotton.
- Dry flat in shade. Direct sun fades dyes over time.
- Iron from the back side of embroidery on low heat with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the fabric.
- Store in a cotton bag, not plastic — and don't pile heavy items on top.
When to Wear It
Traditionally, this piece appears at the moments that matter most in Punjabi family life. The most common occasions our diaspora families order for:
- Vaisakhi (April 13-14) — Punjabi New Year. The single highest-volume ordering season for our overseas customers.
- Lohri (January 13) — Winter bonfire festival, especially significant for a family's first Lohri after a baby is born.
- Gurpurab — Sikh religious celebrations marking the birth or martyrdom of the Gurus.
- Sikh weddings — Sangeet, Mehendi, ceremony, reception. A boy in a Complete Pehrawa is a fixture of every Punjabi wedding.
- Anand Karaj — the Sikh wedding ceremony itself, where the groom traditionally wears a Complete Pehrawa.
- Religious milestones — Amrit Sanchar, family-led Akhand Paaths, Gurpurab kirtan participation.

Why Buy the Complete Pehrawa Bundle Instead?
If you're ordering this piece on its own at $199, plus $35 shipping, total delivered cost is $234. But the Complete Pehrawa bundle includes the Kudta Chadra, Jutti, Kaintha, and Pagg together at $299 with FREE worldwide shipping.
For most families ordering for an occasion, the bundle is the better-value choice — and the colour-coordination across pieces takes experience to get right. Browse the bundle to compare.
