How Fast Kids Grow (Realistic Numbers)
Average growth for kids 0-15:
- 0-12 months: 1 inch per month in length
- 1-2 years: 0.5 inch per month in length
- 2-5 years: 0.25 inch per month in length; 2-3 inches per year
- 6-10 years: 2-3 inches per year (steady)
- 11-15 years: 3-4 inches per year during growth spurts (highly variable)
How Much to Size Up Based on Event Date
Working from the rule "size to fit at the event, not at order placement":
- Event in 0-2 weeks: Order to current measurements exactly
- Event in 4-6 weeks: Add 0.5 inch to chest and 1 inch to length
- Event in 6-12 weeks: Add 1 inch to chest and 2 inches to length
- Event in 3-6 months: Add 1.5 inches chest, 3 inches length, and consider sizing up to the next age tier
- Event in 6+ months: Order closer to event date if possible; otherwise order one full size up
Two-Season Wear: Making One Outfit Last
If you want to wear the same Pehrawa for both Vaisakhi (April) and Lohri (January) the following year, here's the trick:
- Order in January-February for an April Vaisakhi
- Add 1.5 inches chest and 3 inches length
- At Vaisakhi the kurta will look slightly oversized but acceptable
- By Lohri (10 months later), it'll fit closer to perfect
- Don't try to stretch beyond two events for kids 0-5; growth is too fast
- For kids 6+, two events from one piece is realistic
Hand-Me-Down Strategy
Many of our orders are intentionally sized for a younger sibling to wear later. The Giza Cotton fabric and hand-stitched embroidery hold up to multiple wash cycles and remain in good condition for years. Common pattern:
- Buy a slightly oversized Pehrawa for the older child's Vaisakhi
- It'll be fine for two of their events
- Store it carefully (cotton bag, dry place)
- In 2-3 years, it fits the younger sibling perfectly
- Three children using one Pehrawa across 5-7 years is realistic
When to Just Order Fresh Each Year
For kids 0-3, growth is too fast to reliably reuse a year-old outfit. Each year brings major proportional change. If your family does Vaisakhi every year, plan to order a fresh Kudta Chadra annually for kids in this age range.
For kids 4+, one Pehrawa for two consecutive years is realistic if you size for growth. By age 8+, one Pehrawa can serve 2-3 years of events.
Adjustments We Can Make Mid-Stitching
Some sizing decisions can be deferred until partway through stitching, which gives parents flexibility if a child has a sudden growth spurt during the production window. Specifically, the kurta length and chadra length can be adjusted within the first 3-4 days of stitching, before the embroidery work begins on the lower hem and the chadra borders.
If you realise mid-window that your child has grown more than expected, message Veerpal on WhatsApp immediately. We can typically extend kurta length by 1-2 inches and chadra length by 2-3 inches during the early-stitch window. Past day 5 of stitching, embroidery has been placed and the dimensions are locked in. Chest and shoulder dimensions are locked from day 1 (cutting happens first), so a major chest-circumference miss requires re-cutting from a fresh fabric panel — possible but adds a week to the timeline.
For families ordering for events 4+ months out where growth uncertainty is highest, we generally recommend ordering 6-8 weeks before the event rather than 4-6 months out. The shorter window reduces the growth-uncertainty risk while still giving us the 2-4 week production timeline we need.
Frequently Asked Questions
My child just hit a growth spurt — should I cancel and re-order?
Depends on stitching stage. If we're in the first 3-4 days of stitching, we can adjust length dimensions without cancelling. If embroidery has started, it's usually too late to adjust the same piece — but we can offer a discounted re-order on a larger size, with the original piece going to a younger sibling or being set aside for a future event. Message Veerpal on WhatsApp the moment you notice the growth issue.
How accurate is your sizing if my child is between standard age tiers?
Very — every piece is custom-stitched to actual measurements (chest, shoulder, length, sleeve, waist), not to age. So a tall 4-year-old is sized to their actual measurements, not to a "4-year-old" template. The age tier ($5/$10 surcharge for 6-10 / 11-15) reflects the additional fabric used at larger size, not a sizing template.
What if I need to alter the outfit after delivery?
Hand-stitched seams can typically be let-out 0.5-1 inch by a local tailor (most cities have ethnic-wear tailors who can do this). Embroidered areas cannot be altered. For significant fit issues after delivery (more than 1 inch chest difference, more than 2 inches length difference), contact us within 7 days of delivery and we can discuss re-stitching options. See our returns policy.
