How to Tie a Chadra (Tamba) for Boys: A Simple Guide

The chadra — also called the tamba (ਤੰਬਾ) — is the draped lower garment of a kurta chadra, the traditional Punjabi outfit. Unlike stitched trousers, it is a single length of cloth wrapped and pleated at the waist, which is what gives the outfit its distinctive look. If you are dressing a boy for Vaisakhi, a Sikh wedding, or bhangra, here is a simple way to tie it — plus the easy pre-pleated option we offer so you can skip the wrapping entirely.

What You Need

To tie a traditional chadra you need three things: the chadra cloth itself — a single piece roughly 2.5 metres long for an adult, shorter for a child — the matching kurta, and something to secure it (a nala, the traditional waist drawstring, or a snug fold). How to Tie a Chadra — Step by Step

Here is the simplest traditional method. Have the boy stand straight while you work at the waist:

Hold the chadra open behind the waist, top edge level with the waistline, one end in each hand.
Bring both ends around to the front and overlap them snugly at the centre of the waist.
Wrap the cloth once around the waist, keeping the top edge level all the way around so the hem stays even.
Secure it firmly — thread the nala (drawstring) through the top fold and tie it, or tuck the overlapped ends tightly so the chadra sits in place.
Take the loose fabric at the front and fold it into four to six even pleats, accordion-style.
Tuck the pleats into the waist at the centre-front so they fan down neatly.
Adjust the length — mid-calf for younger boys, closer to the ankle for older boys — and smooth the front.

Tips for Tying It on a Child

Tying a chadra on a wriggling child is harder than on an adult. A few things help: keep the wrap snug (a loose chadra slips), make the pleats small and even, and tuck them deep so they hold through a long day of running around. If the boy is very young or very active, the traditional wrap can come undone — which is exactly why we offer the option below.
